In 2015, Scott Hord was sitting a local coffee shop in Smyrna, Tennessee. He was struggling with all the darkness in our culture. This struggle was causing anger in his heart, and he did not want the anger to turn to bitterness. So, Scott prayed, and asked God to take the anger and give him something in return to replace the anger. God answered that prayer by taking the anger and replacing it with two words, “Engage Abortion”. Scott googled the word abortion and found two locations in Nashville that do abortions. He decided to go to one of those locations on Welshwood Avenue in Nashville.
Once there, Scott wasn’t sure what to do or say. He knew that he needed to be humble and loving and, at the same time, truthful. He began to speak and engage. The responses were all over the place- some kind, many ignored him, some made threats towards him. Then one day it happened, a young girl engaged with him in a conversation, and the girl agreed to leave the abortion facility and get an ultrasound. When she came out of the ultrasound, she showed Scott the ultrasound, smiled and said “I’m going to keep my baby”. That one rescue brought Scott great joy and confidence to go back and do it again!
After about the tenth rescue, Scott realized that this ministry was going to be huge. He realized that it was going to need lots of resources, because the ministry was not just about the rescue of the baby, it was also about helping the mom and the baby after the rescue. Some needed food; some needed assistance getting their rent paid; others needed clothing, transportation, housing, a job, and many other things. It was then that Scott partnered with an old friend Jon Adkins and they officially organized, assembling a Board of Directors and obtaining a 501(c)3 status, and became Operation Saving Life! Today, Operation Saving Life is in full swing taking a comprehensive approach to life, rescuing babies but also ultimately meeting the physical, mental, relational, and spiritual needs of the whole family.
In 2019, now four years later, we are celebrating the closure of that
Welshwood abortion facility and the more than 177 babies rescued to date!!
Statement of Faith
Abortion may seem attractive when a mother, couple, or family is overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, doubt, outside pressure from others, or an overall lack of resources needed to raise the child. We understand. As OSL, we believe God is calling, equipping, and uniting committed Christians to come alongside and lift up those in such turmoil.
OSL exists to love others boldly as Christ has first boldly loved us, not only in word but in deed (1 John 3:16, 4:19). We believe that in Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, making a way for fullness of life when none seemed possible (2 Corinthians 5:17-21, Galatians 4:4-7). As followers of Jesus, we have been empowered and entrusted by God with carrying out this ministry of reconciliation. While doing so surely involves meeting material needs in the name of Christ, we know the greatest need of all is to be reconciled with our Creator, the One who gave His life so that we might truly live (Romans 5:6-11, Galatians 1:4).
Finally, we believe and testify to the truth that God still works powerfully to bring life, healing, peace, forgiveness, redemption and restoration by His Spirit to those who will receive Him (John 10:10, Matthew 11:28-30). We believe God calls and equips His people to join with Him in this work, and it is in light of this truth that we so respond, dependent upon the Holy Spirit, and trusting in the faithfulness of the Lord-the Giver of life.
